Identifying Pavement Damage

Catching damage early is the cheapest way to keep a pavement in good shape. Most failures start small and worsen quickly under traffic and water, so knowing what to look for matters.

Common signs of pavement damage:

  • Cracks – Hairline cracks, longitudinal cracks, or alligator cracking (interlinked cracks that look like reptile skin). Hairline cracks are usually surface-level. Alligator cracking points to base or structural issues underneath.

  • Potholes – Holes where the surface has broken away, typically after water has gotten under the asphalt and weakened the base.

  • Edge breakdown – Crumbling or breaking edges, common where the pavement isn’t well supported or has been driven on by heavy vehicles.

  • Sinking or depressions – Low spots where the base has settled or failed.

  • Raveling – Surface aggregate loosening and breaking away, leaving the surface rough and worn.

  • Water pooling – Standing water after rain indicates drainage or grading issues that will accelerate damage if not addressed.

Not sure what’s causing the issue? Send through photos and we’ll advise the best next step.

Pothole and Crack Filling

Potholes and cracks are the two most common types of pavement repair we see. Both let water into the base, which accelerates further damage, so addressing them early saves money long term.

Crack sealing is used for hairline and shallow cracks. The crack is cleaned out, then filled with a flexible sealant that bonds to the existing pavement and stops water entry. Best done before cracks widen.

Pothole patching is used for holes where surface material has broken away. We cut back to sound pavement, clean the area, prime the edges, and patch with the right asphalt mix. Compaction is what makes the patch last. For more details on rapid pothole work, see our pothole repair page.

For larger failures, saw-cut patching or full asphalt repair on a bigger section may be needed.

Pavement Resurfacing

When repairs are no longer enough, resurfacing is usually the next step. It involves laying a new wearing layer over the existing pavement, which restores a smooth surface, improves ride quality and extends pavement life without full reconstruction.

Resurfacing is a good option when:

  • Multiple repairs are clustered in the same area

  • The surface is broadly worn or showing widespread cracking

  • The base is still sound but the wearing layer has failed

  • The site looks tired and presentation matters

It’s not the right call when the base itself has failed or there are widespread structural issues. In those cases, full reconstruction usually works out better long term, and we’ll tell you straight if that’s the situation.
See our asphalt resurfacing page for more detail on overlay works.

Our Paving Repair Process

Every site is different, but the process for pavement repair generally follows three stages.

01

Inspection & Quote

A site visit (or photos for smaller jobs) gets us across the damage, the underlying cause, traffic loads and access. From there you’ll receive a clear scope and quote with no hidden surprises.

02

Preparation

The damaged area is cleaned, weak sections are cut back or removed, and the base is corrected where needed. Skipping or rushing prep is the most common reason repairs don’t last, so this stage isn’t shortcut.

03

Repair & Finish

Depending on the damage, this might mean crack sealing, pothole patching, saw-cut patching, edge rebuilding or resurfacing. The repair is compacted for long-term strength, edges blended in for a clean finish, and the site left tidy. All works are backed by our 12-month workmanship warranty.

Long Term Pavement Maintenance

Reactive repair gets expensive fast. A planned maintenance approach catches small issues before they spread, which means cheaper repairs and a longer life for the pavement overall.

A practical maintenance approach typically includes:

  • Annual or six-monthly visual inspections

  • Crack sealing as soon as hairline cracks appear

  • Prompt pothole patching before water gets into the base

  • Drainage checks and corrections to prevent water pooling

  • Resurfacing every several years (timing depends on traffic and surface condition)

For commercial sites, retail centres and strata properties, ongoing maintenance contracts work out cheaper than waiting for failures. We can quote one-off jobs or scheduled inspection and repair work depending on your needs.
