What is Hot Mix Asphalt?

Hot mix asphalt is the most widely used paving material in Australia for driveways, car parks and roads. It’s made by heating aggregate (rock and sand) to a high temperature, then mixing it with a bitumen binder while both are hot. The mix is delivered to site at temperature, laid quickly, and compacted before it cools.

The “hot” part matters. Higher temperatures give the bitumen the right viscosity to coat each piece of aggregate evenly and bond strongly during compaction. Once cooled, the result is a dense, durable surface that holds up to traffic, weather and water ingress.

This is the material used on the majority of our paving jobs, sourced from our government-approved supplier. The mix specification (grade, aggregate size, binder content) is matched to the job. Residential driveways, commercial car parks, and access roads each call for different specs and thicknesses.

The Benefits of Hot Mix Asphalt

It’s the standard choice for paving for good reason. Key benefits include:

  • Durability – Properly laid and compacted, the mix delivers a strong surface that holds up under daily traffic and Adelaide weather extremes.

  • Smooth finish – The hot application produces an even, consistent surface that’s comfortable to drive on and looks clean from day one.

  • Fast turnaround – Once laid and compacted, the surface cools and is ready for foot traffic within hours, with vehicle traffic shortly after depending on conditions.

  • Cost-effective long term – With a stable base and timely maintenance, surfaces can last many years before needing resurfacing or replacement.

  • Repairable – When damage occurs, patches and overlays bond well with the existing surface, making repairs a cost-effective alternative to full reconstruction.

  • Recyclable – Old asphalt can be reclaimed and reused, which factors into both pricing and sustainability decisions on larger projects.

Applications for Driveways and Roads

The material is suitable for almost any sealed paving application. We use it across:

  • Residential driveways
The most common application. It gives a smooth, neat finish that handles everyday cars, utes and trailers. For more detail on home installations, see our asphalt driveway page.

  • Commercial car parks
Heavier traffic and more frequent use mean a thicker layer and a slightly different mix specification, but the underlying material is the same.

  • Access roads & internal site roads
For both commercial and civil clients, this is the standard material for sealed roads on private property.

  • Hardstand areas
Industrial yards, storage areas, and plant compounds where heavy vehicles park or operate.

  • Resurfacing & overlay works
A new layer over an existing sound base extends the life of a worn surface without full reconstruction.

Our Hot Mix Asphalt Installation Process

Because the material has to be laid while it’s still hot, timing on site matters. Our process keeps everything moving:

01

Base Preparation

The base is cleaned, levelled and compacted before any asphalt arrives. A weak or uneven base will undermine the best mix, so this stage isn’t rushed.

02

Delivery and Application

The mix is delivered to site at temperature in tipping trucks, then laid using a paver (or hand-laid for tight access or smaller areas). Rollers compact the asphalt while it’s still warm, locking the aggregate into the bitumen binder for long-term strength.

03

Cooling and Handover

Once compacted and cooled, the surface is ready for use. Edges and tie-ins are finished, the site is left tidy, and you’ll get clear guidance on timings for foot traffic and vehicles based on the day’s conditions.
